Michigan Cornhole Competition Returns to Windermere Point

This story first appeared in the June 23, 2023, Mackinac Island Town Crier print edition

Contestants gathered at Windermere Point for the annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival Cornhole Tournament Saturday morning, June 17. About 30 teams competed, with roughly one third of them participating in the competitive division, while the rest were in the social division.

For the competitive division, Keith Roberts and Marcus Golladay of Team YG took first place, while Jason LaLonde and Dominick Whipple of Quad City Life took second. In the social division, the team of Charlie Vanarsdal and Stephanie Shea took first place, and the team of Charlie Scavarda and Brandy Scavarda took second. The competition consisted of four rounds of single games, each team playing four games, then a double elimination bracket, each separated by the two divisions. A set of cornhole bags was also raffled off during the tournament.

The cornhole boards were decorated with sponsor logos, including the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau. As bags flew, seagulls swooped low enough to dodge the bags, and the sounds of waves breaking on the beach and children’s voices playing in nearby bouncy houses competed with the country music blaring from the tournament’s speakers.

The event is hosted by Michigan Cornhole.

Joshua Ray of Team Seamsout of Greenville joined the tournament for the third year with his same partner. The tournament is the kickoff to his vacation in the Upper Peninsula, he said. He was playing in the competitive division and took third place. MCKENNA JOHNSON / MACKINAC ISLAND TOWN CRIER
